This is Hillbilly Fred and his surgery will fix a condition called Cherry Eye. The condition is not painful for the animal, however it does cause tear production to stop, which can cause dry eye, or keratoconjunctivitis. This in turn causes red eyes. Cherry eye becomes a problem if the exposed gland becomes infected, which can increase the chance of mucous discharge or ulcers on the eye surface, as a result of contact with your dog's paws. Fred is a 5 month old 3/4 Boxer 1/4 American Bulldog mix. He couldn't be sold because of his cherry eye, so his owner put him out in a pen which looked less than adequate from a picture we were given.

Fred still has some recovery to do from his surgery, but he will now be recovering with his forever family!  The vet says his eyes are healing great!

This is Little Bit and he was born with a facial deformity. He only has one complete nostril.  His lip and teeth are also affected. He is having difficulty eating and drinking and it is possible he will aspirate food/water into his lung. He will have surgery on Friday to close off the deformed nostril and have a tooth that is a problem taken out.  Little Bit was an owner surrender to Marion County Humane Society.  He is a Shih Tzu/Pug mix and is 1-2 years old.  He is just a little guy at 8.5 pounds and loves people, other dogs and cats.

But Lil Bit says look at me now. Thanks to Dr. Pollack he no longer has the slit in his lip, he now has a functional second nostril and the most important factor is he no longer aspirates when he drinks water or eats his food. He also has much more energy to run and play outside now. Lil Bit can't wait to see Dr. P to thank him for making him better.

Great news!  Lil Bit has been adopted!  He is shown here with his mom at the Pet Central Vaccination/Adoption Day!  Mom found out that he is quite the celebrity as several people stopped to say hi to her little cutie!

For all those people who can't keep their dog because they are getting a divorce, moving to a place that "doesn't allow pets", and are going to "have" to take their pet to a pound because the kids no longer play with it...This woman has been through a 9.0 earthquake, a killer tsunami, a nuclear power plant that is emitting radiation, has nowhere to live, is hungry and cold... and she STILL HAS HER DOG!!!

 A Heartwarming Story...

Pet Helpers has had many rescues of pets because the owner had passed and the surviving family no longer wanted or could not take care of their deceased family member’s pets. While calling people that had submitted applications for Mia, (now River) a story with merit was told to a Pet Helpers volunteer.  Rod Lucas submitted an application in hopes of getting a new pet to make his home complete.  When asked why he wanted a puppy, he relayed a heartwarming story....

Rod’s 92-year-old father became ill and Rod took on his Dad’s daily care until he lost his Dad.  His Dad had an elderly Shih Tzu, Bandit, a beloved family dog.  Rod did not choose to put Bandit down, but instead took him into his home and allowed the pet to live out his final days. Rod faithfully walked Bandit everyday and helped him lose some weight, which in turn made Bandit feel better. Unfortunately Bandit, being 16 years old, became very ill after a few months and Rod had to make the decision to let Bandit go instead of letting him suffer.

Rod is a veteran living with a disability. He is legally blind, but has his frontal vision. He walks to the grocery store and places to do his own shopping. He missed having a pet to take walks with every day and as he said to “snuggle with”. Since adopting River, she has learned to fetch and bring toys back to Rod. He is training her to bring objects to him that he may drop and cannot see. River loves her training, although I think she sees it as a game to play with her Daddy.

It is nice to know that there are individuals out there that DO take care of their lost loved one’s pets.  Rod and River, we at Pet Helpers wish you a wonderful future together!
